MALAPPURAM: A programme of cartoon and caricature that began at Kottakunnu Art Gallery here on Monday attracted hundreds of people on day one itself.

Artist M. Dileef, who opened the four-day show titled ‘Chitrakala Yatra,’ with the aim of popularising cartoon and caricature, was surprised at the response. “Nowhere else did I find such a huge turnout, especially on the inaugural day,” said Mr. Dileef, who had conducted caricature shows across the country. Hailing from Nellikkaparamba, near Mukkam, in Kozhikode, the 33-year-old had held street shows in many cities, including Delhi.

His programme here comprises not only an exhibition of cartoons and caricatures, but also instant caricature drawing and demonstration class on cartoons.

Manjalamkuzhi Ali, MLA, inaugurated the show by posing for a caricature, which Mr. Dileef did in 15 minutes. He drew the sketches of over two dozen people who visited the show on Monday.

On Tuesday, more visitors turned ‘subjects’. Classes and demonstration will go on till Thursday.

Training

Nearly three dozen people have registered for the training programme. A drawing teacher in a Middle East school, Mr. Dileef is currently on vacation. He said he was planning to hold the show in other districts also.
