Kodiyeri Balakrishnan inaugurates the week-long festival

KANNUR: Kannur Mahotsavam which showcases the cultural heritage of the district got off to a colourful start on Friday with Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan lighting the traditional lamp.

The week-long festival will include cultural events and other ancillary activities such as orchestra, magic show, folklore demonstrations, ghazal, classical dance, sports activities such as marathon and wrestling, book fair and photo exhibition.

Film actor Jayaram was the chief guest at the inaugural function. K. Sudhakaran, MLA, presided. A.P. Abdullakutty, MP, MLAs K.K. Shylaja and Ramachandran Kadannappally, District Collector Ishita Roy, Superintendent of Police Mathew Polycarp, municipal chairman K. Upendran were present. A dance performance featuring the traditional cultural heritage of the region, including Kalaripayattu, marked the beginning of the fete at the Town Square. A photo exhibition by the Kannur Traffic Police Station, a big book fair in which 65 publishers are taking part, a food festival at the main venue and the ongoing shopping fair added to the festive mood. At Payyambalam, Deepak Samskara erected a sand sculpture on the beach as part of the festival. Mr. Balakrishnan and Mr. Jayaram visited the beach to view the sculpture.
