Gender, a non-issue

Special Correspondent

KOCHI: Women electors have an upper hand in the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency and there were four women candidates in the fray.

But the constituency returned a political stalwart and the gender question did have little relevance throughout the election process. The topical issue of quota for women in Parliament was never heard.

Male voters

The constituency has a total electorate of 1,021,957 out of which 5,05,455 are men and 5,16,502 are women. But when it came to polling day, men took the lead in voting. While 3,83,431 men exercised their franchise, only 3,60,205 women cast their votes.
