Quilon Social Service Society (QSSS), the charity wing of Kollam Latin Catholic diocese, launched a public fund mobilisation campaign in the city on Wednesday to strengthen the society’s Ashakiranam project, an initiative for providing palliative care and financial assistance to cancer patients.

QSSS executive director Pious Malliar said here on Wednesday that Rs. 22,108 was collected through the campaign. He said that annually the QSSS disburses more than Rs. 5 lakh, largely mobilised through various charity initiatives, for assisting cancer patients. Ashakiranam launched in 2014 underlines the power of love in the fight against cancer.

It promotes awareness, early detection drives, behavioural and lifestyle change, financial assistance to poor patients, psycho-social support-based palliative care, and volunteer help. Fr. Malliar said the staff and students from various social service educational institutions joined Wednesday’s campaign, which was inaugurated by KSRTC Controlling Inspector (Kollam) Sreekumaran Unni.

Fr. Malliar said the amount collected through Wednesday’s campaign would be utilised for the educational needs of the children of deserving cancer patients under the care of the Ashakrianam project.
