Four killed in explosion at Aluva biogas plant

One body yet to be identified; many seriously injured

ALUVA: Four persons were killed and many seriously injured when the concrete tank of a biogas plant at Edathala near Aluva exploded owing to a suspected pressure build-up, on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Lalu, 42, of Kochi; Safangiri, 30, of Kolkata, and Ibrahim, 75 of Lucknow, while one body is yet to be identified.

The police suspected that the unidentified man belonged to West Bengal. The injured persons rescued from the site are Pradeep Jana, 18, and Usman, 30, both of Kolkata and Ashraf, 42 of Aluva.

While Pradeep Jana was admitted to Karothukuzhi Hospital, Ashraf was taken to Carmel Hospital and Usman to the Aluva Taluk Hospital.

The police said that the newly commissioned plant exploded while three workers were standing on top of it. Two of them died instantly and the third person, Ashraf, had a narrow escape. Two bodies were recovered from the site later.

Eight fire mobile units of Aluva along with ambulances and doctors in nearby stations were rushed to the spot. A police team led by Superintendent of Police T. Vikram arrived at the spot to carry out rescue operations.

The rescue team pumped out the waste from the plant to pits dug near the site and the operations were on till late in the night.

The accident site was visited by local MP K.P. Dhanapalan and Rajya Sabha Member P Rajeev apart from District Collector M. Beena and DMO Dr. Ramani.
