Flights diverted due to bad weather

Nedumbassery: The international terminal at the Cochin airport witnessed some tense moments on Sunday when some passengers on board an Air India Express flight which had been diverted from Kozhikode protested against the airline’s decision to terminate the service at Kochi.

Officials said that the Air India Express flight operating in the Bahrain-Doha-Kozhikode-Kochi sector had been diverted to Thiruvanathapauram on Sunday due to bad weather conditions at Kozhikode and was later brought to Kochi. After reaching here, the crew said that they would not operate the flight anymore by citing duty hour limitations, leaving the 53 passengers on board stranded at the airport here.

However, some passengers refused to disembark demanding that they be taken to Kozhikode by the same flight and started arguing with the officials.

The issue was settled by the airline a few hours later and while some were taken by road, the others were accommodated in the Jeddah flight of Air India (AI 963) which took off to Kozhikode from here by 4.30 p.m.

Earlier in the day, four other international flights including the Air Arabia flight from Sharjah, Air India Express flight from Dubai, Air India flight from Jeddah and the flight by Qatar Airways from Doha were diverted to the Cochin international airport due to low visibility in the wee hours at the Kozhikode airport, said the officials.
