Five with chikungunya symptoms return from Kerala

Theni: Five persons from Tamil Nadu who were working in Kerala have been admitted to various Government hospitals in the district with symptoms of chikungunya.

While two of them were engaged in cable laying works in Kottayam and Ernakulam districts, three others were tea estate labourers in Idukki district, official sources here said.

They had symptoms such as fever and joint pain, the sources said.

Meanwhile, several residents’ associations in Theni complained that the drinking water was highly polluted and had got mixed with sewage water at some points.

Deputy Director of Public Health Balasubramanian said the suspected chikungunya patients had been separated from others in the hospitals and were being treated in special wards.

Mr. Balasubramanian said 210 people had been appointed to spray insecticides to prevent breeding of mosquitoes.

A house-to-house survey was being conducted at Kombai from where several people go to Kerala for work, Mr. Balasubramanian said. — PTI
