Five of a family killed in accident

: Five of a family, including a three-year-old boy and his parents, were killed when the car in which they were travelling collided with another car on Main Central Road at Kilimanoor, nearly 45 km from here, on Thursday evening.

Four persons, including two children, were also injured in the collision, which occurred around 6 p.m.

The dead were identified as Naushad, 37, a Gulf-returnee, his wife, Shyamna, 27, mother, Harisa Beevi, 58, sister, Haseena, 37, and son, Jabar, 3, all residents of Nilamel in Kollam district.

The injured included Naushad's mother-in-law, Nazeera Beevi, and her two grandchildren, Nazia, 12, and Afsal, 8, and Anish Muhammad, 25, driver of the second car involved in collision. The police said Anish was Naushad's relative and neighbour.

Investigators said eight persons were crammed into Naushad's Maruti 800 car (KL-05-B-87824) which was on its way from Kilimanoor to Karetee.

The accident occurred when Anish who was driving a Skoda car (KL-07-AY-2188) overtook an engineering college bus at high speed and rammed his car into Naushad's vehicle.

Superintendent of Police, Rural, M. Gopalakrishnan, said the stretch of M.C. Road where the accident occurred was wide and well surfaced. There were no bends and motorists could see approaching vehicles from a considerable distance.

Local people and the police evacuated the victims to nearby hospitals in commandeered vehicles.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan has ordered an investigation into the incident.

The police would seek the help of forensic experts to reconstruct the accident.

They have registered a case of rash and negligent driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder against Anish.
