Payippadan Chundan’s victory leaves the

region ecstatic

KOTTAYAM: With the oarsmen from Kumarakom Town Boat Club on ‘Payippadan Chundan’ lifting the Nehru Trophy on Saturday’s regatta, the boat clubs from Kottayam has registered a unique record of bagging the coveted crown for the fifth time in a row.

The win also marked a defining moment for both the club and the boat- they both have registered hat tricks separately.

Dream run

The clubs from Kottayam started their dream run with the 2002 Jubilee competition when Kumarakom Boat Club lifted the trophy.

The oarsmen from Kumarakom Town Boat Club took the baton for the race next year when they won the trophy on Cheruthana Chundan.

In 2004, the club changed their Boat to Payippadan and ever since there was no looking back.

Last year the club marked a hat-trick, the victory was shadowed by the fact that it was not on the same boat for the third time.

With Saturday’s win they have overcome this criticism as the same club has taken the trophy for the third time on the same boat.

Celebration time

The announcement of the results has put the entire ‘kara’ into a festive mood with the ‘karakkar’ bursting crackers.

The whole region is waiting for the young warriors to return with the coveted crown.
