PALAKKAD: A delegation of owners of plots along the National Highway-47 from Walayar to Vaniyampara on the Palakkad-Thrissur border met Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanadan during his visit to the district on Sunday to seek fair price for their land being acquired by the Revenue Department for widening of the Highway.

The delegation was led by the former Member of Parliament V.S. Vijayaraghavan and T.B Prakash. They said the Revenue Department had fixed a low price for the land on either side of the National Highway, even in main town centres notified for acquisition. The Revenue Department had fixed the rates without considering the potential of the land acquired and its proximity to main centres. Public sector institutions had bought land in the area at much higher rates, the memorandum said.

The sub-registrar office, Alathur, had registered cases of under-valuation of property in some areas in Erimayur and Alathur and fixed Rs. 30,000 as the minimum price of one cent of land. But, the Revenue Department was going ahead with acquisition of land without taking this into consideration, it said.

The memorandum demanded that the Government pay adequate compensation for the houses, commercial buildings, factories, etc., demolished for the widening of the road.
