Elephants run amok

THRISSUR: Three elephants featured in the Sivaratri celebrations of Sree Vadakkunnatha Temple here ran amok on Saturday. The elephants were Cheerakode Ayyappan, Devaswom Ayyappan and Sankarankulangara Ayyappan. The police said the incident occurred around 3 a.m. An elephant lunged at another causing a commotion.

Cheerakode Ayyappan was brought to control on the premises of the Vadakkunnatha temple. Devaswom Ayyappan ran about 10 km via Mukkattukara and Mannuthy. A priest who sat atop the elephant jumped and escaped. The elephant was brought to control at Pattikkad. Sankarankulangara Ayyappan ran for 10 km briskly. A priest was atop till it was tranquillised and tethered.
