Kozhikode: It is not too often that students organise an exhibition to sell out the stuff they produced as part of their studies. The students of the bachelor's degree in costume and fashion designing offered by the University of Calicut are out to make that creative distinction.

Under an attractively arranged ‘shamiana' at the courtyard of their study centre at P.T. Usha Road here, they have put on display a variety of costumes designed by them as part of their studies. “Many of our items have been sold out,” said Sreepriya, a final year student and an organiser.

This is an annual event and the creative output of final year students often get prominence in the show. The two-day exhibition, which began on Tuesday, showcases mostly dress items for women and kids.

Saris and women's wear form a major share of the collection. “We purchase cloth from outside and work on it. Our designs are the result of a month's meticulous work,” said another student.

The collection of saris includes attractive pieces of traditional embroideries, ‘kamal kadai', ‘kantha' works and ‘shadow' works.

The exhibition also has a section for kids and gents wear with T-shirts and ‘kurthas' designed with elaborate embroideries and fabric colour works.

A tiny collection of handicrafts made out of different stuffs is also part of the show. “We also have a section of yet to be released items,” said Ms. Sreepriya, who added that they were not for sale as they had not been officially unveiled yet.

They include some of the completely “innovative” items. “It also includes some inventive variety of specially designed bed-spread with light emitting diodes blinking from different corners,” she said. “We will release all of them at a function soon,” she said.
