Duo nabbed for temple thefts

The Kazhakuttom police have arrested two persons for allegedly stealing from several temples across the district.

According to the police, Maniyan alias ‘Vigraham’ Maniyan, 57, of Vattappara and Kumar alias Kumaran, 46, of Mottammoodu, were nabbed by a team of the City Shadow police.

They have confessed to have stolen several valuables including idols and gold ornaments from various temples including those in Mudavanmugal, Vattiyurkavu and Minnamcode. These items were recovered from near Kumaran’s house. The police said that the duo have also allegedly stolen from the offering boxes of temples in Peyyad, Kanjiramkulam, Neyyattinkara and Nedumangad.

Maniyan is known for his notoriety in stealing from over 200 temples in the State over the course of nearly three decades.

He has also jail terms in various cases for nearly 15 years. Kumaran has been accused of being part of a gang which murdered a taxi driver.
