Drive to boost sale of coir products

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The government proposes to organise a campaign to encourage every household to purchase at least a coir product during the Onam season.

Coir Minister G.Sudhakaran said here on Tuesday that it was part of a move to find local markets for the products of this traditional sector.

He said that around 4 four lakh people worked in the coir sector. Foreign market was the mainstay of coir products, with the State contributing 80 per cent of the exports. Even minor developments in the foreign market led to a crisis in the coir sector because of its over-dependence on it. The financial crisis in the American and European markets had affected coir exports. The volume of coir exports from Kerala had fallen last financial year.
