District administration gearing up to tackle water scarcity

Thiruvananthapuram: Faced with dire warnings of a severe drought, the district administration has begun preparations to tackle the impending water scarcity.

A meeting convened by District Collector N. Ayyappan here on Thursday directed panchayats to come up with detailed contingency plans for water-stressed areas by February-end. Constituency-level committees headed by MLAs have been set up to prepare the plans. The committees comprise panchayat presidents, councillors and officials of the Kerala Water Authority and the Irrigation and Ground Water departments.

The MLAs called for urgent measures to preserve natural water sources and restore tube wells in areas likely to face acute water scarcity.
