Cash, documents worth millions of rupees seized in raids in Malappuram



Raid conducted simultaneously at 14 centres

20 cases registered against offenders



MALAPPURAM: Unaccounted cash worth millions of rupees, signed cheques and stamp papers were recovered in a concerted police raid conducted at different parts of the district on Thursday. The raid, initiated under District Superintendent of Police M. Patmanabhan, turned out to be the biggest offensive against unlawful moneylenders in recent memory in the district. Bundles of incriminating documents were also seized in the raids held at Vengara, Malappuram, Manjeri, Tenhipalam, Tirurangadi, Perinthalmanna, Kalikavu, Nilambur, Edakkara, Kuttippuram, Ponnani, Parappanangadi, Pandikkad, and Karuvarakkundu.

The police carried out the raid following an increase in complaints from the public about threats by the moneylenders against those who fail to pay back private loans with interest. The raid started at 7.30 a.m. at the 14 centres simultaneously and continued late into the afternoon. As many as 20 cases have been registered. In a single case, unaccounted money worth Rs.11 lakh was recovered from the house of Mukkil Mohammed at Tharayittal, Vengara. The police said this money would be handed over to the Income Tax Department.

The police team recovered 13 signed blank cheques, three signed blank stamp papers and one power of attorney from the house of Saleem at Perinthalmanna. Two signed blank cheque leaves and a signed stamp paper were recovered from Abu in Perinthalmanna.

Sixty-one signed blank cheques and 12 documents were seized from the house of Rattappalli Josy at Kalikavu. The police seized 124 blank cheques, seven finger enrolled cheque leaves, 20 other records, three vehicle registration certificates, one passport, 83 signed blank stamp papers and 25 revenue stamped white papers were seized from the house of Thangal Manu, son of Abdul Khader Bafaqi Thangal, at Kalikavu.

Apart from several documents and cheques, Rs.1.13 lakh was seized from the house of N.K. Aboobacker at Manjeri. Fixed deposit receipts worth Rs.22 lakh were seized from Mehaboob in Nilambur.

Several blank cheques and stamp papers were recovered from Majeed and Mohammed Ishaque in Edakkara. Cases were registered against Pandhal Mustafa, Razak, Appu, and V.P. Rajendran in Kuttippuram.

The police also registered cases against Pandarathil Siddique (Changaramkulam), Alimakanakath Abdullakutty (Ponnani), Sivasankaran (Parappanangadi), Ambadi Abdul Nasar (Tirurangadi), Kesavan Namboothiri (Tenhipalam), Abdul Kareem (Karuvarakundu), Mohammed Usman (Pandikkad), and Abdul Hameed (Pandikkad).

Signed cheques for Rs.23.90 lakh were recovered from Abdul Kareem. Currency to the tune of Rs.74,000 was recovered from Mohammed Usman, and 1.22 lakh from Abdul Hameed.
