Convict on the run arrested

KOCHI: The Kalamassery police arrested a fugitive convict and a youth alleged to be his accomplice, both from Tamil Nadu, here on Monday.

Yesudas, 29, alias Yesu Vadiya, of Samadhanapuram in Kanyakumari, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison by a Tamil Nadu court. He has nearly 60 cases and 22 non-bailable warrants pending against him, the police said. Nine courts in Tamil Nadu had declared him an absconding suspect. He escaped while being taken from the Chennai Pozhal Central Prison to a Madurai court under high security on October 8. Yesudas jumped off the bus and escaped on a motorbike rode by the accomplice, Naresh, 23, of Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh.

The police said Yesudas and Naresh moved to Kerala after the escape. Since then, the police said, they stole from an offerings box of a church at South Paravoor, burgled a temple at Puthiyakavu and broke into the house of Esthen Jayanthi, a college teacher, at Vanchiyoor, on November 5 and took away goods estimated at Rs. 1.85 lakh. They tried to lift a car from a house near the Ernakulam South railway station, failing which the two made off with an autorickshaw parked near the station last week, the police added.

They were arrested during a regular check and produced before the Aluva Judicial First Class Magistrate II. The Chennai police have been alerted to the arrests and a team has started from there.
