Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The Assembly Petitions Committee has accepted a complaint against a private hospital in the city which allegedly denied medical care to an accident victim, after he revealed his HIV-positive status. The chairman of the Committee, Mons Joseph, MLA, accepted the complaint filed by the chairman of Foundation for Integrated Research in Mental Health, Lalu Joseph.

Ashok Nair, who heads the Trivandrum Network of Positive People, had been injured in a road accident near Palayam on May 28.

The complaint said that the patient was rushed to a private hospital with fractures on his leg. But when Ashok volunteered the information that he was HIV-positive, the hospital denied him treatment or even an ambulance to take him to the Medical College hospital, the complaint said.

Action sought

Action should be taken against those responsible for the incident as no other HIV-positive person should be subjected to such discrimination, the complaint said.
