Special Correspondent

KANNUR: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that the community police system introduced in the State as part of the Jana Maithri Suraksha Scheme will be linked with local libraries.

Inaugurating the new building of the Kannur Central Library and the District Library Council here on Saturday, the Minister said that beat officers involved in the community policing activities were directed to keep in contact with local libraries in their respective areas to secure local-level information and keep in touch with the public. In the district, the scheme was being introduced in the Payyannur municipality in the first phase.

He said the library movement in the State had to be extended to allow more people to benefit from libraries. The formation of the Library Council had helped decentralise the activities of the libraries, he said adding that today each library in the State had a large collection of books.

However, the success of the library movement depended on increase in the number of people who utilised the libraries. The libraries should be able to attract students, government staff and the public.

The development of science and technology should in no way be allowed to hamper reading habits of the people, he said.

Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy presided over the function.

A.P. Abdullakutty, MP, MLAs Ramachandran Kadannappally and M. Prakashan and Library Council secretary K. Balakrishnan Nambiar were present at the function.
