Circus Academy at Thalassery to open this month

The Circus Academy coming up in Thalassery to continue the town's circus legacy will be opened in July.

The town has a rich heritage of circus left by Keeleri Kunhikannan, a gymnastics teacher at the BEMP School, and his disciple M.K. Raman, who set up the Keeleri Kunhikannan Teacher Memorial Circus and Gymnastic Training Centre at Chirakkara after the former's death in 1939.

It was decided that the academy would start functioning from July at a meeting chaired by District Collector V.K. Balakrishnan and attended by State Sports Council president T.P. Dasan, among others, on June 29 here. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister M. Vijayakumar and Education Minister M.A. Baby would participate in the inaugural function, an official press release said.

It was decided to expedite the steps to take over the 4.11- hectare plot near the Thalassery Engineering College at Kundumala in the Eranholi village for setting up the academy.

The State government has made a budgetary allocation of Rs.25 lakh for developing the academy.
