Chandy flays Sudhakaran’s remarks

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has taken exception to the public statements against UDF convener P.P. Thankachan by Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran vis-a-vis the meeting of primary service cooperative bank presidents recently.

In a rejoinder issued here on Saturday, Mr. Chandy said Mr. Thankachan had merely announced the political decision taken by the UDF to boycott the meeting in his capacity as the convener. The Minister should not have isolated and attacked him for it. He also charged the Minister of having crossed the limits of decency in the verbal attack. The Minister had brought discredit to the cabinet, Mr. Chandy said.

The meeting was convened to discuss the ‘restrictions’ imposed by the RBI on the cheque facility provided by these institutions by the RBI and the order asking them to furnish details of deposits over Rs.1 lakh to the Income Tax (IT) Department. He contended that there was no restriction by the RBI on the cheque facility provided by the cooperative banks. The IT Department’s order was a decade old and he was not aware of any fresh move to enforce it. The Minister was not prepared to discuss the Vaidyanathan Committee report which was of importance to the cooperative banks. It was in that context that the UDF decided to boycott the meeting, Mr. Chandy said.
