Cancel pet show: Maneka

Staff Reporter

Thrissur: Animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi has urged the District Collector, Superintendent of Police and the Director of Animal Husbandry Department to cancel a pet show to be held at Thalikkulam here on September 5, 6 and 7.

The show is being conducted by the Animal Husbandry Department, in association with Pet Associates, as part of the District Tourism Promotion Council’s Onam celebrations.

The exhibition will have rare birds and dogs, according to the organisers. Ms. Gandhi termed it illegal.

Import licence

“The animals and birds to be shown include birds such as cockatoos, kiwis, emus and pedigreed dogs. There are very strict laws regarding the ownership, import, transport and exhibition of animals. None of the owners of the birds being shown as foreign birds have import licence. Where have these birds come from? None of the breeders of these pedigreed dogs have mandatory licences for breeding,” she wrote in a memorandum.
