Cambridge test to assess English skills

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The prestigious Cambridge English for Speakers of Other Languages (Cambridge ESOL) is ready to help companies that need a rapid and accurate means of assessing the language skills of their employees.

Business Language Testing Service (BULATS) offered by the department is an economical, easy-to-understand test and reporting system. It was developed and is jointly run by Cambridge ESOL, the Alliance Francaise (France), Goethe-Institut (Germany) and the Universidad de Salamanca (Spain) in more than 30 countries.

Kevin Coyne, Marketing Officer (India) of the University of Cambridge ESOL examination, told The Hindu that BULATS is a multilingual system, available in English, French, German and Spanish. This (service) enables multinational businesses to establish the same standards for language proficiency across their entire organisation.

Each candidate, who takes the test is given a rating between 1-100, which reflects levels ranging from beginner to near-native speaker. They also receive a report outlining their performance in each area. Their score is benchmarked against the Common European Framework of Reference scale.

Cambridge ESOL also offers a Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) and Certificate in Advanced English (CAE). This certificate is also recognised by most U.K. universities and by other teaching organisations and employers around the world. Companies which would like to offer the test for its employees can contact Mr. Coyne. Email: kcoyne@
