Law to control ostentation needed, says Women’s Commission head

KOLLAM: Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission D. Sridevi has said that a law to control wedding ostentation is necessary.

She was delivering the keynote address at a seminar on ‘Wedding Ostentation and Dowry’ organised by the district committee of the Kerala Mahila Sangam here on Sunday. Ms. Sridevi said that those well placed in society should set an example by conducting simple wedding functions. She advised parents not to get their daughters married into families that demand dowry.

Cause of dispute

Women should imbibe the strength to oppose injustice, she said. Dowry was the major cause of family disputes. The bulk of complaints before the Women’s Commission pertained to dowry. Former acting Chairman of the State Human Rights Commission S. Balaraman was the moderator. Vallikavu Mohan, R. Lathadevi, J. Chnchurani and S. Valsalakumari addressed.
