Thrissur: An exhibition-cum-sale of books organised by the Thrissur District Library Council began at the Indoor stadium on Monday.

Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University vice-chancellor K.G. Paulose inaugurated the exhibition.

The fair provides an opportunity for the libraries in the district to purchase books from all reputed publishers in the State, says P.S. Anil, District Library Officer. About 50 publishers across the State are taking part in the four-day fair. Thrissur district has 525 libraries. Depending on criteria such as number of books, distribution and public participation, libraries have been graded from A to E.

The district has five career guidance centres and an academic study centre. The model village library of the district has exclusive sessions of books for elder citizens, women and agriculturists.

During the current financial year, the government has allotted Rs. 1.5 crore for the libraries in the district, Mr. Anil said. “Children are now frequenting libraries as part of their projects. About 80 per cent of the books purchased by the libraries are meant for children,” he said.

Books on personality development, health and agriculture also have great demand. Major publishers including Kerala Sahithya Akademi, Current Books, D.C. Books, Green Books, H& C, Poornodhaya, NBS, Mathrubhoomi and Olive Books have stalls in the fair. The fair will conclude on Thursday.
