On SNC-Lavalin case

KOLLAM: The Bharatiya Janata Party has welcomed Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan’s statement that he will perform his constitutional duties to ensure the prosecution of all those listed as accused in the SNC-Lavalin case.

At a press conference here on Wednesday, party State president P.K. Krishnadas said that his party would support the Chief Minister in this endeavour.

As Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Achuthanandan was courageous. But as Chief Minister he should not be timid. The BJP expected the Chief Minister to honour the statement he had made.

He said the statement from Mr. Achuthanandan that he was examining the records of the case to conclude whether it was politically motivated was misleading.

He alleged that the Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was going out of the way to protect those listed as accused in the Lavalin case.

“The Lavalin scam was a joint conspiracy of the State and Central leaderships of the CPI(M).” The Central Bureau of Investigation should also investigate where the bribe collected through the Lavalin scam had gone, Mr. Krishnadas said.

It had now come to light that the bucket collections of the CPI(M) were actually aimed at laundering its ill-gotten wealth.

He said he believed that the CBI was not under any political pressure while identifying the accused in the case. “This is because the case was investigated under the direct supervision of the Kerala High Court.”
