BJP demands probe

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BJP leader M.T. Ramesh on Saturday demanded an inquiry into various aspects of functioning of jails, especially Kannur Cental Jail, in the State and complaints about discrimination in sanctioning paroles to prisoners.

At a press conference here, the BJP leader said that the High Court or the Human Rights Commission should take the lead in this respect.

Mr. Ramesh said that Kannur Central jail was under the control of the CPI (M). Prisoners owing allegiance to the CPI (M) were getting preferential treatment. The Director-General of Police (Jails) had told the Court that jailers at the Kannur jail were under fear. If they feared the political masters of the prisoners, that was a direct indictment of Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. He called for an investigation into the allegation that the Revenue Minister, Forest Minister, and department officials undermined the Munnar mission.
