Awareness programme on water sanitation held

KOCHI: More than 100 teachers from various parts of Ernakulam district participated in an awareness programme on water sanitation and hygiene organised by the district wing of the National Green Corps at the bird sanctuary in Thattekad here on Tuesday.

Department of Science and Technology supported the programme along with the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment. Teachers selected from the primary and upper primary schools in the district interacted with experts on the occasion.

T. U. Kuruvila, MLA, inaugurated the programme. P. Harinarayanan, Scientific Officer of the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, presided over the inaugural session.

R. Sugathan, renowned ornithologist, spoke on the ecological importance of forests. George Abe, scientist at the sub-centre of Centre for Water Resources Development and Management in Kottayam, presented a paper on climate change and water sanitation. S. Sitaraman, chief co-ordinator of the programme, said that teachers who participated in the programme will take the lead in organising awareness programmes on water sanitation and hygiene in their schools.
