KERALA

Art pieces from anything

Unnikrishnan Chowara of Vadakkumcherry in Palakkad has no formal training in art. But he has an inborn talent that makes wonderful art pieces from any material. He not only makes attractive art pieces but also writes poetry in Malayalam on his creations. The Maha Ganapathy figure he made from two coconuts has received praise from many art lovers. The coconuts had been affected by `Mandari' disease.

From three coconuts, he made art pieces depicting three different stages, `Yesterday, today and tomorrow' (Ennale Ennu Nale).

He makes art forms from any waste material, be it roots, coconuts, coconut shells, bamboos, reeds and so on.

He has made the model of a human skeleton from coconut shell and bamboo, which has attracted many people. His miniature works of old types of dhows made of wood in Kerala are attractive.

He is also engaged in making models of houses of different types as per plans drawn by architects. Mr. Unnikrishnan is planning to hold an exhibition of his works so that art lovers get a chance to have a feel of his artistic work.
