A study centre to honour a great poet

KANNUR: A study centre to commemorate Mahakavi P. Kunhiraman Nair will be set up at Vellikoth, the native village of the late poet.

The Mahakavi P. Study Centre is being started in the village in the Ajanur panchayat in Kasaragod to provide facilities for students and researchers to learn about the legacy of the late romantic and mystic poet in Malayalam.

The initiative to set up the study centre has been taken by a group of the poet’s relatives and admirers in the village, a press release here said.


The major objective of the centre was to create a literary culture helpful to encourage studies on Malayalam literature in general and Mahakavi P.’s contributions in Malayalam literature in particular, it said.

The other objective of the centre include setting up of a museum in the name of the poet, collection and study of his poems, organisation of programmes to commemorate the poet, provision of financial assistance to deserving students in the P. Smaraka School at Vellikoth and conduct poetry competitions and debates, among others.


An ad hoc committee for co-ordinating the activities to set up the centre was formed. P.P. Janardhanan Nair is its president.
