60 labour quarters in an unfinished state

PATHANAMTHITTA: Nearly 60 unfinished labour quarters of State Farming Corporation of Kerala Ltd. at Kalanjoor-Vazhappara, near Konni, are more or less in an abandoned state.

The concrete structures are covered with bushes and creepers growing all around. The corporation had launched the work, estimated at Rs.10 crore, 12 years ago to provide accommodation to its staff and rubber-tappers.

It is alleged that the contractor has abandoned the project. The doors and windows of many buildings have been stolen.

There are allegations that the corporation had taken up the work when repairs on the existing quarters were pending.

A vast expanse of land attached to the corporation has been remaining fallow and nothing has been done for its effective utilisation, says an employee, who did not want to be named.

There are allegations of large-scale irregularities in the construction of the quarters at Kalanjoor-Vazhappara, he says.

The corporation’s labour quarters project has met with a similar fate at Chithalpetty, Mullumala, Kuzhikkad, Mukkanpara and Kumaramkudy, alleges another employee, who also preferred to protect his identity.

He says the government should initiate a detailed inquiry into the alleged irregularities in all these works without delay.
