500 bags of sandal sapwood powder seized

PALAKKAD: The police seized 500 bags of sandal sapwood powder from a rice mill at Panthakamedu in Thenkurissi near here on Thursday.

The police raided the rice mill following some leads provided by two persons under their custody in connection with the seizure of a large quantity of sandalwood chips and powder worth Rs.5 crores from a rice mill godown at Erimayur near Alathur recently.

Sapwood powder is used for making `agarbathy' and it has no smell or oil content.

The seized powder comes to about 20,000 kg. The cost of the powder is Rs.15 a kg in the open market. The sapwood must have been collected from sandalwood oil extraction factories that were functioning earlier, Forest Department officials here said.

They raided some old rice mills in different parts of the district looking for sandalwood stock on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the police produced 2,500 kg of sandal wood chips and powder stock seized from a rice mill at Erimayur recently before the Alathur Magistrate Court on Wednesday.
