District Collector S. Suhas on Monday visited families severely affected by the flooding at Valiyathuruthu near Kainakary.

Around 250 houses have been inundated with water following the collapse of an outer bund of a paddy polder.

The Collector said steps would be taken to find a permanent solution to the problem. “The Irrigation Department has prepared an estimate for the construction and strengthening of the outer bund. We will do everything possible to hasten the process,” Mr. Suhas said.

The Collector said the relief camps would continue to operate until the situation becomes normal. “Those who suffered losses will be compensated,” Mr. Suhas added. Meanwhile, local residents who were up in arms alleging apathy on the part of authorities ended their protest following talks with the Collector. According to local people, two houses were completely destroyed and several houses suffered partial damage following the bund collapse.

Principal agriculture officer Beena Natesh, Kuttanad Tahsildar Antony Scaria and Irrigation Department officials accompanied the Collector.
