18 AISF-AIYF activists arrested in Adoor

PATHANAMTHITTA, JULY 24. As many as 18 persons owing allegiance to the All-India Students Federation (AISF) and All-India Youth Federation (AIYF) were arrested for destroying notice boards and smashing the glasses of a college bus at the College of Engineering at Adoor today.

Sources said that about 30 AISF-AIYF workers marched to the college by 1 p.m. demanding action against the college authorities in connection with the suicide of an engineering student, Rajani S. Anand. Rajani, a computer engineering student at the college, had committed suicide by jumping from a building in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. The protesters barged into the administrative block of the college and destroyed eight notice boards, besides smashing the rear glasses of a college bus parked on the campus.

The arrested include the Kerala University Senate member, A. Rajiv, the AISF State committee member, R. Sajilal, the district secretary, Suhaz M. Haneef and the AIYF district president, Manoj Charalel.

Local MLA blamed

Meanwhile, addressing a protest meeting at the Adoor Central Junction, the CPI district secretary, M. Sukumara Pillai, alleged that the local MLA, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, and the Minister for the Welfare of Scheduled and Backward Communities, M.A. Kuttappan, were equally responsible for the death of Rajani.
