13 hurt as bus falls into swamp and overturns

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thirteen persons were injured when a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus from East Fort to Venjaramoodu fell into a 15-foot-deep swamp near Kidangayam at Vembayam on MC (Main Central) Road on Saturday afternoon. Among the injured are the driver and conductor of the city fast service. According to the rural police, the incident took place when the driver braked hard on seeing another bus, also of the corporation, taking a turn near a petrol pump ahead. The bus slipped, fell into the swamp and overturned.

The injured were rushed to the Government hospital at Kanyakulangara and later shifted to Medical College Hospital. Eleven of them are in Medical College Hospital. Two children have been admitted to Sree Avittom Tirunal (SAT) Hospital. The condition of the driver, Biju John, 33, hailing from Kottarakara, and the conductor, Anil Kumar, 37, of Kuttiyani, is said to be serious.

According to the police, the bus, from Vikas Bhavan depot, was in high speed when the incident took place. The police have registered a case.

Killed in brawl

A man was killed in a brawl near a toddy shop at Kadinamkulam on Saturday evening. The police said Mohanan, 45, a labourer, died on the way to hospital. A case has been registered. No one has been arrested in connection with the murder.

Dies of burns

A 26-year-old woman, who sustained burns in her house near Vattiyoorkavu on Friday, died in Medical College Hospital. According to Kerala Fire and Rescue Services, Sindhu set herself ablaze in the bathroom after pouring kerosene on her. The police and the local people rushed her to hospital. The woman, who received 95 per cent burns, died in the evening. The police have registered a case. The body has been shifted to the mortuary.
