Weavers to get subsidy for purchase of powerlooms

Weavers belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, who purchase powerlooms would be given a subsidy of 90 per cent and those belonging to other categories a subsidy of 50 per cent, according to G.T. Kumar, Deputy Director, Handloom and Textiles Department.

Inaugurating a handloom exhibition here on Monday, organised by the Ministry of Textiles and the State Handloom and Textiles Department here on Monday, Mr. Kumar said that the department would provide Rs. 2 lakh worth powerlooms to weavers under the new scheme in which a subsidy of Rs. 1.8 lakh would be given to weavers belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, and Rs. 1 lakh to other category.

Bank loans would also be arranged by the department, he said.

Computer design

The department had introduced a computer designing equipment at a cost of Rs. 2 lakh in order to help weavers save money on colouring for particular designs. But, most of the weavers were not utilising the facility, he lamented.

Zilla panchayat president Ravi Kumar urged the people to make use of the eight-day exhibition at the Guru Bhavan here. He advised weavers in the district to make optimum use of the facilities provided by the government under various schemes and become self-reliant.
