Dharmapuri: The Collector, M. Chandrasekaran, inspected the progress of watershed development activities taken up under the Drought-Prone Area Programme (DPAP) at Naagarkoodal near here on Saturday.

Naagarkoodal village in Nallampalli block was selected to implement the DPAP at an estimate of Rs. 30 lakhs and the works are in the final stage of completion. The total area of the watershed is 1105 hectares with the area under treatment alone accounting to nearly 800 acres.

The Collector also inspected check dams, stonewall and contour bunding, sunken ponds and percolation ponds that were constructed in the watershed to augment the groundwater level. Farmers pointed out that the groundwater level had significantly improved following various water conservation measures taken up as part of the programme.

As a result, farmers who had earlier confined to a single crop had now tripled their crop in the current year, thanks to the improvement in the groundwater level. The Collector also visited the bio-fuel, oil extraction unit at Krishnapuram and DPAP training centre at Nallampalli. The Project Officer, DPAP, P.M. Chandrahaasan, accompanied him.
