Water recedes in flood-affected villages

BIJAPUR, AUG. 14. The villagers on the contour of the Narayanpur Reservoir heaved a sigh of relief as floodwaters receded substantially, following the reduced water discharge from the Alamatti Dam.

There was heavy discharge of water from the Alamatti Dam for almost for a week, after an increase in the inflow of water due to heavy rains in the catchment areas. This caused the submerging of more than 1,200 acres of non-acquired land in 22 villages of Bagalkot and Hungund taluks.

Today, the discharge from Alamatti Dam was reduced to 1,30,015 cusecs from 1,45,721 cusecs on Friday.

The discharge was 1,80,441 cusecs on Thursday when the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, offered poojas at Krishna at dam site.

The Assistant Commissioner, Bagalkot Sub-Division, S.G. Patil, told The Hindu over phone from Bagalkot that the assessment of crop damage would be completed by Monday.
