The water level in Hemavati Reservoir at Gorur near here has been increasing gradually with good rains in the catchment area, forcing the officers of Hemavati Project to issue a warning to people in the downstream to shift to safer places.
The press release, issued by the Hemavati Project Circle, states that the people settled close to the downstream should relocate to the safer places as crest gates of the dam could be opened anytime. As on Wednesday morning, the water level in the reservoir stood at 2,912.5 ft. against the full reservoir level of 2,922 ft. The live storage in the reservoir is 27.28 tmc ft. Last year on this day water available in the reservoir was only 5.67 tmc ft.
The catchment area of the reservoir, spread over Hassan and Chikkamagaluru districts, has received heavy rains since June. The inflow in the last 24 hours was 20,535 cusecs and if it remains so for a couple of more days, the water level would reach the maximum, prompting the officers to open the crest gates.
