Villagers protest seeking justice

KOLAR, OCT. 7. High drama prevailed near the residence of the Deputy Commissioner on Tuesday after villagers staged a protest there. It all began with Padmamma (25) along with hundreds of villagers of Muduvadi Hosahalli began a dharna in front of the residence of Deputy Commissioner, G.N. Nayak, alleging that the police were partisan. Padmamma, a native of Muduvadi Hosahalli, claimed that Srinivasa Reddy of the same village, who was in love with her, married her in Bangalore on September 27. The parents of Srinivasa Reddy, who were opposed to the marriage, reportedly "abducted" him on their arrival in Kolar from Bangalore after the marriage. After failing to trace her husband, Padmamma reportedly filed a complaint with the Kolar Rural police.

After nearly a week, the police reportedly summoned Padmamma and her relatives to the office of the Superintendent of Police on Tuesday evening. Though she tried her best to convince the police that Srinivasa Reddy had married her, the police allegedly let him leave the place, Padmamma alleged. And when she tried to stop Srinivasa Reddy from leaving, the police manhandled her, Padmamma charged. In protest against this, the villagers staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's residence demanding justice.
