VHP to hold rally in Mysore tomorrow

MYSORE, FEB. 26. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) will organise a rally here on Saturday to protest the alleged diversion of funds collected from temples to improve religious institutions of other communities.

Keshavmurthy, legal adviser to the parishad, told presspersons today that of the Rs. 79 crore collected from various temples coming under the jurisdiction of the Muzrai Department, Rs. 71 crore had been utilised by the State Government to improve churches and madrasas.

Questioning the Government's propriety, Mr. Keshavmurthy said there were 2.8 lakh temples in the State in 1997 but their number had declined to 2.4 lakh.

This was because many temples had been put to disuse or were in a dilapidated state, he said.

The funds collected should have been used to develop the dilapidated temples. But the Government had diverted the funds to develop churches and madrasas, he alleged.

He said the Government planned to bring temples under its control by amending the Muzrai Act but desisted from doing so this year in view of the elections.

Religious leaders, sadhus and seers of various maths would participate in the rally to be taken out from Kote Anjaneyaswami temple at 11 a.m., he added.
