Tribal people demand tabling of Forest Rights Bill

Correspondent

CHIKMAGALUR: About 100 members of the District Tribal Farmers' Association courted arrest here on Friday demanding the introduction of the Scheduled Tribes Forest Rights Bill in the ongoing winter session of Parliament.

They took out a procession and raised slogans against "pseudo- environmentalists" before blocking traffic on Belur Road near the Azad Park.

The protestors, who included a large number of women, were protesting against the eviction of tribal people from forests in various parts of the country due to construction of dams, mining and formation of national parks.

They said officials of the forest and police department should stop harassing tribal people.
