MANGALORE: Most of the official transactions of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) are carried out in Kannada. In the set up of the company, finding equivalents in Kannada for technical words needs special attention, K.G. Alva, manager, MESCOM, said at the valedictory of a training camp on administrative Kannada on Friday.

The week-long camp was organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture. Thirty employees of the company participated in the programme. N. Ismail, principal of Badria College and director of the camp, said it was important to inculcate love for their language among Kannadigas.

People in white-collar jobs tend to treat Kannada as a "second-class" language, he said. The Chief Minister's indication that the Kannada Development Authority would be given constitutional powers was welcome, he said.
