Mangaluru City Corporation’s swimming pool at Lady Hill will be given a facelift in a phased manner and its filtration unit will be changed in the first phase for ozone treatment, Mayor K. Bhaskar Moily said here on Thursday.

Speaking to presspersons during the inspection of 19 ongoing development works in the city, he said that ozone treatment would improve the quality of pool water.

The filtration unit for ozonation would be changed at an estimated cost of Rs. 98 lakh and only a single bid has been received to take up the work. Hence, it has been sent to the Deputy Commissioner for approval.

Rajesh Kumar, Assistant Engineer of the corporation, said that now the corporation changed the water in the pool twice a year, which required 50 lakh litres of water. If there was ozonation system it was enough if we changed the water once two years. It would save 50 lakh litres of water a year. The Mayor said that a toilet complex has been built on the premises of the swimming pool now at an estimated cost of Rs. 20 lakh. The building of the pool would be renovated in phases later by constructing a gallery for seating 150 persons. It has been planned to replace the walk area tiles with anti-skid tiles to prevent slippery owing to accumulation of hair oil on the tiles.

The Mayor said that a toilet has been constructed inside the Kadri Park at an estimated cost of Rs. 12 lakh.

Mohammed Nazir, Commissioner of the corporation, said that the re-setting of tiles along the 800-m-long walking path in Kadri Park was being done now. A mud track would be laid adjacent to the walking path. In addition, an open gym and a play area for disabled children would be built in the park. Funds from the Union government’s Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) would be used for the same.

The Mayor said that one-km-long road from Naguri (Kankanady) to Mangaluru Junction Railway station would be relaid by the Public Works Department. Now, properties on 640 m stretch have been acquired by the corporation.

Praveenchandra Alva, Chairman, Standing Committee for Town Planning and Improvement, Premananda Shetty, Leader of the Opposition in the city corporation council, M. Shashidhar Hegde, whip in the council, were present.
