Belgaum: The strike by powerloom workers under the banner of Kayakjeevi Coolie Nekarara Sangha, Sulebhavi, near here, entered the eighth day on Thursday. There are about 1,500 powerlooms and about 900 workers are engaged in manufacturing polyster saris in Sulebhavi, one of the major sari production centres in the district.

The workers, led by the sangha president, Shashikant Malgi, the sangha's Belgaum president, Bhimmanna Kanade, and Maruti Dhagennavar, recently submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner demanding that the Factory Act and Minimum Wages Act be implemented for the powerloom workers.

Stating that the Government had not extended any welfare measures to the workers in the powerloom industry, they demanded that it provide housing and health facilities for their families and schools for their children.
