Special trains cancelled

The Kochuveli-Mangalore Junction special train (No. 06304), and train No. 06303 in the reverse direction that was scheduled to run on Tuesday was cancelled “due to operational reasons”, said a Southern Railways release.

Karate championship

A State-level inter-school and college students’ karate championship will be conducted at Korgappa Memorial Hall on the premises of Gokarnanatheswara Temple, Kudroli, for three days from January 23. Organised by All College Students’ Association, there will be free boarding and lodging arrangements for outstation participants. About 200 students are expected compete in it, a release said.

Paediatrics body officer-bearers

A. Shivaram Pai was elected unanimously president of Dakshina Kannada unit of Indian Academy of Paediatrics for 2014 in the annual general body meeting of the unit here recently. Ashviji Shriyan was elected its secretary. The installation ceremony of the office-bearers will be held at Eden Club on Thursday, a release said.

Faculty development programme

P.A. College of Engineering will organise a three-day faculty development programme on ‘Advances in signal processing and its Implementation using VLSI’, starting on January 22. A release said the AICTE-sponsored programme will include resource persons from NIT-K, Surathkal, Mangalore University, Manipal dotnet, and Broadcom Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore. Apart from lectures, there will be hands-on practice in laboratories on using Cadence Xilinx and MATLAB.

Indefinite strike for ESI benefits

The Akhila Bharata Karmika Sangha appealed to the Central government to take control of the ESI Hospital in Mangalore, establish an ESI hospital in Udupi, set up a hospital for beedi workers, and to ensure health benefits and job securities to people working in private organisations. To press its demands, the Sangha – led by general Secretary Sudatta Jain – will hold an indefinite hunger strike from February 7 before the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina Kannada.

Protest against Nethravati diversion

The Struggle Committee against Nethravati River Diversion Scheme will hold a protest at the confluence of the Kumadhara and Nethravati in Uppinangadi on January 24 from 9 a.m. Niranjan Rai, convenor of the Samiti, condemned Union Minister M. Veerappa Moily for announcing in Chickballapur that the river diversion project will “go ahead at all cost”.

Restarting of Aadhaar centres

The second phase of Aadhaar registration, suspended since January 10 due to technical issues, has restarted in certain centres of the district on Tuesday. A release listed these centres as: Mangalore City Corporation Commercial Complex, Lalbagh; MCC Commercial Complex, Kadri, Mallikatte; Community Hall, Permanur; Community Hall, Ullal; MCC sub-office, Surathkal; Old Taluk Panchayat Office, B.C. Road; Community Hall, Puttur; Gram Panchayat Office, Uppinangadi. Operations will start in the other centres soon, said the release.
