MYSORE: State Election Commissioner M.R. Hegde on Monday said that special security arrangements will be made in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Chikamagalur and Raichur districts for the polls to panchayat bodies.

Speaking to presspersons after reviewing arrangements for elections in Mysore division, he said that special security arrangements are being made in these districts in view of naxal activities in the region. He said that the initial report suggests that naxals are not against elections to the zilla and taluk panchayats.

Mr. Hegde said: "If it is felt that the election process may be affected by naxals, deputy commissioners have been asked to take suitable action."

On the issue of postponing polls owing to the destruction in the State owing to torrential rain, Mr. Hegde said that a Supreme Court Order does not allow the State Election Commission to postpone the elections. The Election Commission has not obstructed relief work in rain-affected areas, he added.

The Deputy Commissioners of Mysore, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikmagalur districts took part in the meeting.
