Sira social worker gets award

TUMKUR, MARCH 3. Gowribai, social worker from Sira town in Tumkur District, was chosen for 2004 World Women's Day Award at a meeting of Viswa Mahila Dinacharan Samiti here on Wednesday.

Annapoorna Venkatananjappa, chairman of the samiti and president of Lekhakiyara Sangha, told presspersons after the meeting that the award was instituted in memory of the late Gangamalamma, wife of the founder of Siddhartha Education Society, H.M. Gangadharaiah.

Ms. Venkatananjappa said the awards in the past three years were presented to `Salumarada' Thimmakka, Mary David, and Sarswatamma Srinivasaiah. Ms. Gowribai was known to have helped many women in distress despite the fact she herself faced problems in life. Her grit and courage were exemplary.

The Minister for Information and Higher Education, G. Parameshwar, would present the award to Ms. Gowribai at the World Women's Day function to be held here on Monday. Plans were drawn up at today's meeting to involve women from all walks of life in the function, Ms. Venkatananjappa added.
