Shivaram's poser to JD(S) on waiver of farm loan interest

HASSAN: The Minister for Information, B. Shivaram, on Monday took serious exception to the Janata Dal (Secular) leaders claiming credit for the waiver of interest on farm loans given by cooperative banks. He said it is the contribution of the coalition government not merely that of one party.

The Minister told presspersons that the waiver of interest has not helped farmers to a large extent as a majority of them borrowed money from commercial banks. "The Janata Dal (S) leaders could have taken similar steps to waive interest on loans borrowed by the farmers from commercial banks when they were in power at the Centre," he said. "Making false promises to secure votes in the election is an easy thing, but to keep the promise made is not easy," he said. The Minister accused the Janata Dal (S) leaders of indulging in vote bank politics.

He refused to react to the reported statement of the Janata Dal (S) State unit working president, H.D. Kumaraswamy, that functioning of some Congress ministers was not satisfactory.

Mr. Shivaram said he is not prepared to react to the accusations of those who are not part of the Ministry.
