Sewage being used for farming in Gulbarga

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The authorities have turned a blind eye to the use of untreated sewage for farming on the outskirts of Gulbarga.

Officials of the city corporation, Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board and the Karnataka Pollution Control Board have not taken steps to prevent the use of sewage from the open drain by farmers to grow vegetables that are supplied to Gulbarga every day.

Though there have been many reports on the issue, the authorities have not taken any action. The board or the city corporation has not initiated action to build a proper drainage system to carry sewage to the treatment plant.

Sewage is also used for the cultivation of horticultural crops such as banana, and jowar and red gram in the vicinity of the open drain on the outskirts of the city.
